Group naming

The names of the groups created by migRaven can be freely defined within certain parameters.

If the authorization groups created by migRaven are later used by 8MAN, then the group names are to be already agreed upon with the possibilities of 8MAN.

How to set List Permissions

1. The use of list groups and permission groups to set list permissions

In other articles we already referred to the aspect that for the allocation of list permissions, list groups and permission groups can be used. For this purpose, there are questions such as:

  • “Can I use only list groups to set list permissions?”
  • “Can I use only permission groups to set list permissions?”
  • “Can I use permission groups on higher directories and list groups below?”
  • “Up to which level can the list groups be used and from which level the permission groups?”

2. Example

Build perfect NTFS list rights

1. Necessity for list authorizations

Generally access rights to NTFS-file servers are assigned deeper than the 1st directory level. As soon as this is the case, one must take care of the fact that the user can should also bo able to browse the file system for appropriate directory. Here there are various possibilities with various effects.

2. Variants of assigning list rights

For browsing through the directory system, migRaven can flexibly form list authorizations. In addition to this, two options are fundamentally offered:

  1. For the list authorizations, own authorization groups are formed, which for example include the “Change” authorization groups from the lower levels.
  2. 2. In the directories above the explicitly authorized folder, for example the “Change” authorization groups are used for assigning the list authorizations.

The optimal way is the combination from both options. It should however be used in 1st and not up to the lowest level because otherwise the account appears in several groups. But it should not also be dispensed to position one because otherwise too many entries are included in the ACLs of the above directories. An ACL can maximum includes 1800 ACEs. Too many ACL entries make the access to directories slow.

Role Mining Novell Trustees

1. Converting all Novell Rights Information

Under Novell one can place permissions (Trusts) on other objects than only on users or groups. We integrated an intelligent role mining mechanism into migRaven, which guarantees that no information is lost, but all translated into suitable permission group structures, which corresponds with Microsoft Best Practice.

1.1. This is how it works:

  1. The group type for the permission group is defined in migRaven: Domain local, global, or universal groups are available for selection
  2. Definition of the name concept for the permission groups

Drag & Drop

In Drag & Drop mode the scanned permissions are represented in a directory tree.

The Drag & Drop mode stands out because of the fact that the user- and group-names do not need to be written manually any more. To set permissions, you can search objects like users or groups in the AD, put them in a clipboard, and then draw from there or from anywhere in the current tree to any folder in the new draft, therefore “Drag and Drop”.

1. Create your future directories

There are two possibilities to generate the directories for the future folder structure:

How to Design & Work

Two processes to edit permissions

Since version 3.1, migRaven features the additional Drag & Drop mode for allocating permissions. The “Table Mode” is well known, in which the objects to be permitted are entered in the table. The new mode stands out especially by the fact that the user- and group names do not need to be written any more. One can select objects in the AD, park them in an intermediate repository and from there draw them over from any directory of the initial position to a target directory.

Global AD Statistics (live)

Display All Domains

After launching migRaven you see a tab with the designation “Global AD Statistics (live)”. You can call for this before you scan your AD. All domains which are found by migRaven are displayed, even the ones which are not reachable and those which are not licensed. For every domain you can see the reachability with your account and your trust level.

Orientation

Welcome to the migRaven online manual!

migRaven is the file server tool for the easy migration of complex file server structures in case of timely structuring of the necessary Microsoft-conformal NTFS-authorizations.

In the navigation menu on the left side, please find all instructions as well as technical information regarding migRaven.

For example click on installation, in order to display all necessary steps (for free trial version and purchase version) By clicking the [+] next to the Help category, you can unfold an overview of the individual contributions.

Find recursive or circular group relations

Select circular relationships in the AD-groups directly from the database (migRaven 2.1)

Group-A is a member of group-B and group-B is again a member of group-A – which is quickly becoming a problem. One wonders why the user’s login is taking a long time. This can be a problem.
